Why cotton wears differently

Cotton is a natural fibre that takes up moisture. In the reference values textile labs use (ASTM D1909), it holds about twenty times more than polyester. That is what makes cotton panties feel soft and breathable.

It also changes how they come across after wear. In a controlled study, assessors rated polyester T-shirts worn for an hour of indoor cycling less pleasant and more intense than cotton ones. A second study, on fabric samples, found odour intensity strongly linked to fibre type, with cotton and wool lower than polyester. Cotton is the mild choice. If you want more character, lace behaves more like the synthetics.

Cuts you'll find in cotton

Cotton turns up in most cuts here: thongs, cheeksters, classic briefs and tangas among them. In British English a tanga has narrow sides and more fabric at the back than a thong; in the US the word is rare, so ask if you're unsure. Sizes on the listings run from XS to XXL, while UK and US brands use numbers of their own: ask her for the size on the tag.
