About this selection

One fibre with three names

Lycra is a brand name. The fibre behind it is elastane, and American labels call it spandex. All three words describe the same thing: a synthetic thread that stretches a long way and springs back.

It is never used alone. A garment is always mostly something else, such as nylon, polyester or cotton, with elastane mixed in. Everyday cotton briefs hold a few percent; sporty and shaping styles hold more. So when a seller picks lycra as the fabric, she usually means a smooth, stretchy, close-fitting piece. The care label lists the real blend, and it is worth asking her for it.

How stretch fabric looks and lasts

Stretch fabric looks small lying flat and then gives when worn. A flat photo can therefore mislead about size, so compare the photos with the size on the listing, which runs from XS to XXL, and ask for the tag size if you need it.

Elastane tires with heat. Hot water and tumble dryers wear out the spring over time, which is why labels on stretch underwear tend to ask for a cool wash. If you plan to store a piece just as it came, keeping worn panties covers bags and where to put them.

Questions

Is lycra different from spandex?

No. Lycra is a trade name, spandex is the American word and elastane is the European one.

What do lycra listings ask?

In euros, the median asking price on lycra listings is €25. That figure comes from live listings, not completed sales. The seller sets her own price, and you agree the final total with her.

Which cuts come in lycra?

Any cut can. The Cut field on each listing names the shape, and the photos show it. If you prefer a natural fibre, cotton is the usual alternative, and lace often contains elastane too.

Can I ask for a longer wear?

Yes. Message her and ask; she decides what she offers.
