Gym sex: exercises to improve your sex life

Exercise. Whether you hate it or love it, there’s one reason to do it that you might not have thought of: sex.

Because sex is so pleasurable, we don’t tend to focus on the fact that it’s also a physical workout that requires stamina, muscle strength, and flexibility - especially for a long session. And lots of people don’t know that some of the unique muscles involved in sex, like the kegels, can be exercised to bring about greater pleasure.

We’re not talking about long, tiring workouts. There are small, simple exercises you can do at home that can make all the difference to your sex life.

Let’s take a closer look at these sex exercises

Have you ever heard of the pelvic floor? The pelvic floor is the collection of muscles that spans the bottom of the pelvis and supports the pelvic organs, including the bladder, bowels, and womb. You can feel these muscles, also known as ‘kegels’, tense and activate when you stop your urine mid-flow - and can enhance sexual sensation.

Kegel, or pelvic floor exercises, are simple. All you have to do is contract (tense) these muscles and hold for 5 seconds, then release, and repeat 10 times. Ideally do this 3 times a day.

These are the same exercises that are often recommended to pregnant women to prevent tissue breakdown that can result from the strain of childbirth. But are they really only useful for this purpose? More importantly, are they only useful for women?

Absolutely not. The male pelvic floor is similar to the female pelvic floor. It extends from the pubic bone to the coccyx, and multiple studies have shown that training these muscles leads to great sexual benefits for people of all genders.

For penis-owners, strengthening these muscles increases blood flow, consequently promoting longer-lasting erections, and satisfaction for everyone.

Because these exercises allow for greater erection control, they are also very useful for problems related to premature ejaculation..

An extra tip? Contracting these muscles during intercourse increases sensitivity and provides tantalising new sensations for you both.
